1988 - Hilton Napoleon 'Nappy' Lamare, traditional jazz banjoist, guitarist and vocalist from New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day at the age of 82. 'Nappy' attended Warren Easton High School in New Orleans, where he got his first banjo, and immediately began working professionally. For the next few years, he played in bands led by Johnny Wiggs, Bill Lustig, Johnny Bayerdorffer, Sharkey Bonano and Monk Hazel. He became famous while playing with Bob Crosby and the Bobcats in the mid-thirties. In the sixties, he was co-leader of the 'Riverboat Dandies', who enjoyed moderate success on the club tour of the US. He was still playing infrequently in the 1980's. |
