1972 - Melvin Lastie, Trumpeter, cornetist, composer and arranger from the 9th Ward in New Orleans passed away on this day at the age of 42. Lastie toured in the 1950's with Amos Milburn, Little Willie John, Roy Brown, 'Big' Joe Turner and countless others. In the 1960's he formed AFO records with Harold Batiste, the first all black owned label. He was the brother of David Lastie and the nephew of R&B legend, Jesse Hill. |
