| 1911 - Mamie Desdunes, a pianist and a native of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day at the age of 32. The exact date of her birth is still somewhat a question, so the best guess by researchers assuming her birth name listed on census records was Mary Celina Desdunes was 1879. She is most widely known as the woman mentioned in Jelly Roll Morton's famous song Mamies Blues. Morton mentioned her as a prime inspiration on him as a young player many times in interviews over the years. Bunk Johnson played with Mamie, and has said she was quite popular. |
