1943 - Tony Joe White was born on this day. A singer-songwriter and guitarist and a native of Oakdale, Louisiana. As a child he listened to cajun music, and after graduating high school, he began a long music career started by playing in nightclubs in Louisiana and Texas. He's best known for his 1969 hit that he wrote called "Polk Salad Annie". He also wrote "Rainy Night in Georgia", which was recorded by Brook Benton in 1970; Additionally he wrote "Steamy Windows", for Tina Turner in 1989. "Polk Salad Annie" was also recorded by Elvis Presley and Tom Jones. During his long career he's cotributed to and incredible discography that includes over 30 albums. |
