1983 - Preston Jackson, traditional jazz trombonist from New Orleans died on this day. His family moved to Chicago when he was a youngster, but Jackson always carried a torch for New Orleans traditional jazz. During his long career, he played with greats Jimmie Noone, Punch Miller and the Dodds brothers. Jackson returned to New Orleans in the 1970's and played at Preservation Hall until his death. Preston died on his way to a Preservation Hall Jazz Band concert in St, Louis. This was a fitting end to his legacy. |
