1986 - Emanuel Sayles, traditional jazz banjoist and guitarist from Donaldsonville, Louisiana passed away on this day at the age of 79. He was the son of banjoist, George Sayles, and studied under Dave Perkins. In 1925, he began working with Bebe Ridgley's Tuxedo Orchestra. He also worked the riverboats with A.J. Piron and Fate Marable, and was a member of the famous Jones-Collins Astoria Hot Eight. His performance credits didn't stop there as he worked with Sidney Desvigne, and led his own group in Chicago in the thirties and forties. In his later years, he was a regular at Preservation Hall, and was immortalized in the TV documentary 'This Cat Can Play Anything', which appeared on PBS.
