| 1891 - Johnny Stein was born on this day. Traditional jazz drummer from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born John Phillip Hountha, and was the first leader of the 'Original Dixieland Jazz Band' before they made the historic recordings. He also organized the original New Orleans jazz band for Jimmy Durante, and played in Chicago and New York for most of his career. Johnny died in New Orleans on September 30, 1962. |
