1902 - Leon Roppolo was born on this day. Traditional jazz clarinetist and saxophonist from Lutheran, Louisiana. He is considered one of the immortals of jazz even though his career was short. He went to New Orleans at the age of 14, then played with the Brunies brothers' band and the Halfway House Orchestra. He then acquired fame with the 'New Orleans Rhythm Kings'. He shared composer credits on 'Tin Roof Blues' and 'Farewell Blues'. He spent the last eighteen years of his life in a sanitarium. He died in New Orleans on October 5, 1943. |
