| 1925 - Clifton Chenier was born on this day. Accordionist and vocalist from Opelousas, Louisiana. Clifton was primarily known for exposing the world to Creole and Zydeco music. He sang in French patois, Creole and English, and dexcribed his music as the 'French two-step with hinges', but was disctinctly the black zydeco variant. Chenier recorded for many labels such as Arhoolie, Crazy Cajun, Checker Gin, etc. He had lots of regional hits which included 'Squeeze Box Boogie'. In 1979, he had part of his right foot amputated, as a result of diabetes, which only slightly slowed him. Clifton was nominated for Grammy's in '79 and '86, and was memorialized in a film called 'Hot Pepper' in '73, which included an interview with his 108 year-old grandmother. Clifton died in December of 1987. |
