| 1902 - Luis Russell was born on this day. Traditional jazz pianist from Careening Cay, Panama. He found his way to New Orleans, and performed at Tom Anderson's famed club in the 1920's with Albert Nicholas and Paul Barbarin. In the mid twenties, he went to Chicago to play with King Oliver and Doc Cooke. He then led his own band and toured the country and recorded. This band was fronted by Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong from 1935 to 1943. Luis died in New York in 1962. |
