1933 - Freddie Keppard, cornetist and trumpeter from New Orleans died on this day at the age of 43. During his career, he performed with Joe 'King' Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton in Storyville at the turn of the 20th century. He played during the transition from the Buddy Bolden style to the Louis Armstrong sound. Morton recalls, "….he became the greatest hot trumpeter in existence. He had the best ear, the best tone and the most marvelous execution I ever heard and there was no end to his ideas". |
