1909 - Lester 'Blackie' Santiago was born on this day. Traditional jazz pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the member of a musical family that included his brother, Burnell, and his uncle, Willie. He began plaing with Arnold Depass in the twenties, then mainly associated with groups led by Paul Barbarin. He led his own groups, and recorded extensively, sometimes in Creole patois. 'Blackie' died in New Orleans on January 18, 1965. |
