1952 - Herb Morand, a jazz trumpeter and most well-known for his connection to the New Orleans, Louisiana music scene passed away on this day. He was born in 1905 and was the brother of singer Edna Hicks and half-brother of singer Lizzie Miles. He was a member of the Harlem Hamfats , whose members were "Kansas" Joe McCoy (guitar, vocals) and his brother "Papa" Charlie McCoy (guitar, mandolin); Herb Morand (trumpet, vocals), John Lindsay (bass), and Odell Rand (clarinet); Horace Malcolm (piano), Freddie Flynn (drums) and Pearlis Williams (drums). He returned to New Orleans in 1941, where he led his own band and joined George Lewis' ensemble from 1948-1950. |
