1935 - Huey P Long, the Governor and US Senator of the State of Louisiana was assassinated on this day at the age of 42. His contributions to Louisiana music were through his interest and work associated with upgrading the LSU Marching Band when he was a US Senator. Along with his handpicked band director, Castro Carazo, they made the LSU marching band second to none. Long and Carazo wrote or co-wrote several of LSU’s songs, most notably "Touchdown For LSU" , "The LSU Cadets March" and "Darling of LSU." Long's songwriting was silenced when he was assassinated in 1935. |
