1998 - Betty (Big Mama) Rankin, a major figure in New Orleans jazz music, passed away on this day at the age of 79. She was a curator at Tulane University's William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive and later was the volunteer host of a longtime WWOZ radio jazz program. She was also the mother of guitarist John Rankin.
