1965 - Lester 'Blackie' Santiago, traditional jazz pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana died on this day. He was born in 1909, and was the member of a musical family that included his brother, Burnell, and his uncle, Willie. He began playing with Arnold Depass in the twenties, then mainly associated with groups led by Paul Barbarin. He led his own groups, and recorded extensively, sometimes in Creole patois. 'Blackie' died in New Orleans. |
