1893 - Bernard Saxon 'Bernie' Shields was born on this day. Traditional jazz guitarist, banjoist and organist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He started his career in the 'Six and 7/8 String Band' in the early 1900's. He also had a long career in vaudeville. Bernie died in New Orleans on February 20, 1978.
