1885 - Charles 'Sunny' Henry was born on this day. Traditional jazz trombonist from Magnolia Plantation, Louisiana. He started playing with the 'Eclipse Brass Band' with Jim Humphrey in 1902. His New Orleans career began in the 'Excelsior Brass Band' and Hippolyte Charles' dance orchestra. During the twenties he worked with Amos White and John Robichaux. Later worked the dance halls at Canal and Carondelet, and was lead trombonist with Louis Dumaine in the WPA band. In the forties worked in the 'Yound Tuxedo Brass Band' then went with the 'Eureka Brass Band', where he played until his death. 'Sunny' died in New Orleans on January 7, 1960. |
