1908 - Don Albert (Albert Dominique) was born on this day. A trumpeter and bandleader and a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. He came from a musical family where his uncle was Natty Dominique, and he was also a relative of Barney Bigard. He got his start playing in parade brass bands in New Orleans at the beginning of the 1920s. Albert led his own bands out of Texas in the 1930s and 1940s, with sidemen that included Alvin Alcorn, Louis Cottrell, Jr., and Herb Hall. After 1932 was more of a manager's than as a performer, and his bands travelled the world. He returned to active performing in the 1950's and played at the New Orleans Jazz Festival in 1969. He passed away in January of 1980 at the age of 71. |
