1940 - Fernest Arceneaux was born on this day. An accordionist and a native of Lafayette, Louisiana. He learned to play an accordion owned by his brother-in-law by under the watchful eye of his father, a local Creole musician. Fernest polished his craft by backing up his father's band at local house parties. At the encouragement and mentoring of the King of Zydeco Music, Clifton Chenier, he returned to playing the accordion, and the Thunders made the move from rock & roll to Zydeco music. Fernest became known as the Prince of Zydeco and played "old school" zydeco which was blues-based and sung originally in French, the direct descendant of this "La La music" or "La Musique Creole" first performed at rural house parties and fish fries of long ago. Fernest passed away in September 2008 at the age of 68. |
