1900 - Albert Nicholas was born on this day. Traditional jazz clarinetist from New Orleans, Louisiana. Albert was a pupil of well-known teacher Lorenzo Tio, Jr., and the nephew of 'Wooden' Joe Nicholas. In his teens, he played with Buddy Petit, the Marreros and Arnold DePass. In 1919, he joined the Maple Leaf Orchestra, then worked again with DePass and Manuel Perez in the early 1920's. He went to Chicago to join King Oliver, then toured the world until the late 1920's when he was back in New York with Louis Armstrong, Luis Russell and Jelly Roll Morton. He then played in small groups and lived in Paris, France until his death on October, 2 1973. |
