| 1969 - George 'Pops' Foster, traditional jazz string bassist and tuba player from McCall, Louisiana died on this day. His brother, Willie, was also a musician and played the New Orleans circuit. He bagan his career with the 'Magnolia Orchestra'. Until World War I, he palyed with the 'Olympia Brass Band', the 'Eagle Band' and with Kid Ory. He worked with Fate Marable on the riverboats, then joined Ory in California in the late twenties. He then worked with Louis Armstrong and in the forties was fetured on radio. He is reputed to have been the most recorded bass player in jazz. In the 1950's he played many concerts in New York. In the mid-fifties he moved to California to play with Earl Hines and died in San Francisco. |
