1877 - Charles (Buddy) Bolden was born on this day. Cornetist who is said to have been the most influential of early jazz musicians. We can only assume the stories of the real players are true, because Bolden was never recorded. He was committed to a state assylum in 1907 for smashing a jug over his mother-in-law's head. This occurred before jazz was recorded. Bolden died in the same assylum in 1931. His manner of playing was re-created later by his protégé, Bunk Johnson, during the New Orleans jazz revival of the 1940's. Bolden has been immortalized in a number of versions of the tune 'I Heard Buddy Bolden Say'. |
