1980 - Olivia L’Ange Porter Shipp, a bassist, cellist, pianist and a native of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day at the age of 100 in New York City. She spent most of her professional life in New York, where she worked as a musician from until the 1950s. She is best known for organizing the Negro Women’s Orchestral and Civic Association in New York in the 1920's and 1930's.
