1949 - Paul Mares, traditional jazz cornetist and trumpeter from New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day. Paul was born in 1900, and was from one of New Orleans musical families that included his brother Joseph, and his father Joseph, Sr. Paul played with dance bands around New Orleans as a youngster, and by 1920 was playing in Tom Brown's band. He then became the leader of the 'New Orleans Rhythm Kings' in Chicago, and was a national sensation. He was the co-composer of jazz standards that included 'Tin Roof Blues', 'Farewell Blues' and 'Milneburg Joys'. He retired from music in the early thirties, and died in Chicago. |
