1950 - Zachary Richard was born on this day. A cajun vocalist and multi-instrumentalist and a native of Scott, Louisiana. He received his first recording contract at the age of 21. From 1976 until 1981, he lived in Montreal, recording seven French language albums including two gold albums, Mardi Gras and Migration. He returned to Louisiana recorded english laguage albums Mardi Gras Mambo, Zack’s Bon Ton, Women in the Room, and SnakeBiteLove. He was now an international star. In 1996, Zachary founded Action Cadienne, a volunteer organization dedicated to the promotion of the French language and the Cadien/Cajun culture of Louisiana. He received three honorary doctorates, bestowed by the University of Moncton (New Brunswick), the University of Louisiana (Lafayette) and Ste Anne’s University in Nova Scotia. Richard suffered from a stroke on October 17, 2010, leading him to suspend work and appearances for the rest of that year. |
