| 1889 - Amos White was born on this day. Traditional jazz cornetist from Kinstree, South Carolina. He came to New Orleans in 1919, after a tour with the military. He first played in the Cadillac Bar, then joined 'Celestin's Tuxedo Brass Band'. He worked on the riverboats with Fate Marable and recorded with the former in 1924 for Okeh. In that year he organized the 'New Orleans Creole Jazz Band', which was primarily a dance band performing at Tranchina's restaurant. He settled in California, and died in 1980. |
