1972 - Tony Parenti, traditional jazz clarinetist from New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day. He was born in 1900, and a child prodigy and an established musician by the age of twelve. At the young age of 14 he played in ragtime bands and turned down an offer to go North and record with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. He played with the Papa Laine units and on the steamers of the Mississippi river, until he became a leader of two of his own bands. He formed the Liberty Syncopator's, which played at the Liberty Theater and the Lavida Ballroom, and recorded for Columbia. In the twenties, he left New Orleans to become a world-renowned jazz star, and played on Broadway into the 1960's. Tony died in New York City. |
