1927 - Harmonica Fats (Harvey Blackston) was born on this day. A harmonica player and a native of McDade, Louisiana. His first single went to the R&B charts in 1961 and was called "Tore Up", and he initially played dates with Bill Cosby, Ringo Starr, and Lou Rawls. In the late '60s,'80s, and early '90s, he was a blues DJ, and was founding one of the West Coast's top blues events, the Long Beach Blues Festival, and he was also the promoter of the Big Time Blues Festival, also held in Long Beach. He passed away in January 2000 at the age of 72 |
