| 1967 - Traditional jazz trumpeter and vocalist, Henry 'Red' Allen, Jr. from Algiers, Louisiana died on this day. He began his career with the 'Allen Brass Band of Algiers' with his father, Henry Allen, Sr. He also played in other brass bands in New Orleans. During the following 20 years he played with a long list of jazz legends that included, Chris Kelly, Kid Rena, Joe 'King Oliver, Fate Marable, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. After stints with others, he led his own band until his death in New York. |
