1951 - Harry Choates, Cajun multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and bandleader known as the Godfather of cajun music, passed away on this day at the age of 28. He was a native of either Rayne or New Iberia, Louisiana, and had the biggest cajun hit ever in 'Jole Blon'. The success of the song was astounding, but Choates' rights reportedly were sold for $50 and a bottle of whiskey. His style was unique in that it blended cajun and western swing, and he influenced musicians like Doug Kershaw, and Dewey Balfa. Alcoholism and his lifestyle took a toll, and he reportedly died in jail awaiting trial on wife and child desertion. |
