1946 - Davidson C. Nelson, traditional jazz pianist and trumpeter from Donaldsonville, Louisiana died on this day. He was born in 1906, and was the nephew of Joe 'King' Oliver. During the early part of the 20th century, he accompanied Ma Rainey. Toured with Jelly Roll Morton, and led his own combo in Chicago. In 1929, he went to New York and worked with Luis Russell and King Oliver. He also organized the original Mills Blue Rhythm Band. In 1930, he toured with the Mae West show, 'The Constant Sinner'. |
