1969 - Manuel Manetta, traditional jazz multi-instrumentalist from Algiers, Louisiana passed away on this day. He was born in 1889, and was the member of a musical family that included many of his decendants. He was a music teacher for more than fifty years. He bagan his musical career in the early 1900's playing in Tom Albert's band, and was a piano 'Professor' in the red light district of 'Storyville' at Willie Piazza's Basin Street brothel before it closed. He also performed with legends Buddy Bolden, Frank Duson and Edward Clem. During the World War I days, he played with Papa Celestin and Joe Howard, and worked with 'Kid' Ory in California. During the twenties, he played saxophone for Manuel Perez, and bacame widely known for his ability to play trombone and trumpet simultaneously and in harmony. He died in Algiers. |
