1913 - Louise 'Blu Lu' Barker was born on this day. Traditional jazz vocalist from the Treme and Gentilly areas of New Orleans. She began performing for parties in private homes at the age of 7, and married her childhood sweetheart, Danny Barker, the famous jazz musician and historian. She recorded for a number of famous record labels, and inspired the likes of Billie Holiday and Eartha Kit for her singing approach. She was inducted into the Louisiana Blues Hall of Fame in 1997. She passed away in 1998 at the age of 84. |
