1973 - Edward 'Kid' Ory, early jazz trombonist and native of LaPlace Louisiana, dies in Hawaii at the age of eighty-six. He played with all of the New Orleans 'Storyville' legends. He is said to have given Louis Armstrong his first professional job. Ory's legacy is that he was the first and leading exponent of the tailgate style of jazz. During his career, he led many of his own bands and was a member of 'King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band' and Louis Armstong's 'Hot Five. Ory did participate in the resurgence of New Orleans style jazz of the 1940's. |
