1899 - Johnny Wiggs (John Wiggington Hyman) was born on this day. Traditional jazz cornetist and bandleader from New Orleans, Louisiana. He also performed as Johnny Hyman, and worked with Happy Schilling, Tony Parenti, and Norman Brownlee through the 1940's. He is reputed to be largely responsible for the jazz revival during the 1940's, and brought many musicians out of retirement. He founded the New Orleans jazz club, and taught and directed music education in New Orleans. Johnny died in New Orleans on October 9, 1977. |
