1961 - Dominick J. 'Nick' La Rocca, traditional jazz cornetist and bandleader from New Orleans, Louisiana died on this day. 'Nick' was born in 1889, and the leader of the history-making 'Original Dixieland Jazz Band'. They recorded the first commercially available jazz discs in New York in 1917. The band changed the face of popular music around the world, forever, with this historical event. The other members of the band were Eddie 'Big Daddy' Edwards, Larry Shields, Henry Ragas and Tony Sbarbaro. He is credited as the composer of many standard tunes. Nick died in New Orleans. |
