1992 - Ed Blackwell, R&B and jazz drummer from New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day. Ed played with Roy Brown, Ornette Coleman, Huey 'Piano' Smith and Ray Charles to name a few. His technique of drumming made him one of the best known drummers of free jazz. e played in a bebop quintet that included pianist Ellis Marsalis and clarinetist Alvin Batiste. After his death, the following year he was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame. |
