2013 - Big Chief Jerod (Rody) Lewis, native of New Orleans, Louisiana and the Chief of the Black Eagles Mardi Gras Indian tribe passed away on this day at the age of 49. He had one of the most distinctive and powerful voices in New Orleans’ Mardi Gras Indian community. He was one of the few Mardi Gras Indian Chiefs to be recorded commercially. In 1998, he was featured along with several other Indian chiefs album “United We Stand, Divided We Fall,” by the Indians of the Nation. He was also one of the lead vocalists in the ground-breaking group, the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra. |
