1900 - George Lewis was born on this day. Traditional jazz clarinetist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is one of the most celebrated of the traditional New Orleans players. He played his first jobs with the 'Black Eagles Band' in Mandeville, Louisiana. He was very active with the brass bands in the 1920's, and marched with Chris Kelly's band, Eureka Brass Band, Buddy Petit and Kid Rena. In the 1940's was with 'Bunk' Johnson, and toured Japan with his own band in the 1960's. Lewis died in New Orleans on December 31, 1968. |
