2012 - James (Surgar Boy) Crawford, a singer and trombonist, and a native of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day at the age of 77. He wrote the classic "Jock-A-Mo" in 1954, which was later covered as "Iko Iko" by The Dixie Cups, Dr. John, Belle Stars, The Grateful Dead and Cyndi Lauper. He formed a band which local DJ Doctor Daddy-O named "The Chapaka Shawee", the title of an instrumental they played. The group was re-named "Sugar Boy and his Cane Cutters". Since 1963 he's made only sporadic appearances including those in support of his grandson Davell Crawford. |
