1889 - Dominick J. 'Nick' La Rocca was born on this day. Traditional jazz cornetist and bandleader from New Orleans, Louisiana. 'Nick' was the leader of the history-making 'Original Dixieland Jazz Band'. They recorded the first jazz discs in the history of music in New York in the twenties. The band changed the face of popular music around the world, forever, with this historical event. The other members of the band were Eddie 'Big Daddy' Edwards, Larry Shields, Henry Ragas and Tony Sbarbaro. He is credited as the composer of many standard tunes. Nick died in New Orleans on February 22, 1961. |
