1914 - Robert Pete Williams was born on this day. Worksong blues guitarist and blues singer born in Zachary, Louisiana. He worked in the cotton and sugar cane fields until 1928, when he moved Scotlandville and continued manual labor there for 6 or 7 years until he learned to play guitar. In the 1950's, he killed a man in a bar-room brawl and was convicted and sent to Angola state prison. After being discovered by a record producer in prison, he was paroled in 1959, much the same way Leadbelly was realeased, by singing his way to freedom. Although very much in demand by Blues and Jazz festival afifioandos, his remaining days were spent on a farm in Denham Springs, Louisiana, tending to livestock as the parole authorities would not let him out of the state to perform. He died in 1980 at the age of 66. |
