1921 - Tony Jackson, traditional jazz pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day. He is said to be the unrivaled king of the Storyville 'Piano Professors' and a musical genius. He worked the bordello's of Storyville until 1904, primarily at Gipsy Shaefer's, Hilma Burt's, Lulu White's and Countess Willie Piazza's. He returned to New Orleans in 1911 and worked at Early's. Jackson composed hundreds of popular songs and typically sold them for $5 to $10. He did keep ownership of 'Pretty Baby' and 'Some Sweet Day'. Tony died in Chicago, before he had a chance to record. |
