1913 - Olivia (Lady Charlotte) Cook was born on this day. She was a pianist and vocalist, and a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. She was a fixture in New Orleans jazz clubs, and began her career as the only woman in Herbert Leary’s 17-member band. She played Dixieland-style and traditional jazz with Papa French and his sons George and Bob French, Wallace Davenport, Danny Barker, Louis Nelson, as well as her own band. She died in New Iberia, Louisiana at the age of 91 in 2004. She also taught piano to children, at one point giving lessons to Harry Connick, Jr., the New Orleans-born vocalist, bandleader, and pianist. |
