1983 - Roosevelt Sykes, nicknamed "The Honeydripper", born in Elmar, AR and grew up in St. Louis passed away on this day in New Orleans, Louisiana at the age of 77. His first release was "'44' Blues" which became a blues standard and his trademark. He quickly began recording for multiple labels under various names including 'Easy Papa Johnson', 'Dobby Bragg' and 'Willie Kelly'. Roosevelt left for New Orleans in 1954 as electric blues was taking over. He recorded again in the 1960s for the Delmark, Bluesville, Storyville and Folkways labels. He was an influence on later buesmen like Memphis Slim. |
