1892 - Johnny Dodds was born on this day. Born in Waverly, Louisiana, but grew up in New Orleans with brother and drummer Warren 'Baby' Dodds. Johnny made a major contribution to King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band and the development of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five. He studied clarinet under Lorenzo Tio, Jr., whose other pupils included Barney Bigard Sidney Bechet and Jimmie Noone. After fronting his own band in Chicago in the 1930's, Johnny died in 1940 in Chicago, just before he was able to take part in the New Orleans revival of the 1940's.. |
