1998 - Johnny Adams (Laten John Adams), a blues, jazz and gospel singer and native of New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day. He was known as "The Tan Canary" because of his mult-octave range. He began singing gospel music, but crossed over in 1959, when his neighbor Dorothy LaBostrie persuaded him to record "I Won't Cry" for Joe Ruffino's local Ric label. During the 1960's he recorded for small labels and charted 4 times. He continued to tour until 1983, when he signed with Rounder Records and released 9 albums produced by Scott Billington. He died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after a long battle with prostate cancer. |
