1898 - Henry 'Kid' Rena was born on this day. Traditional jazz trumpeter from New Orleans, Louisiana. He was at the Waif's home with Louis Armstrong and was taught by Peter Davis with Armstrong, and later studied with Manuel Perez. He worked with Kid Ory early in his career, then put together his own Dixie Jazz Band in the 1920's. He made successful trips to Chicago, and later played in the Tuxedo Brass Band. He led a group that included Alphonse Picou and Alec Bigard that played at the Brown Derby. He made only one disc in 1940 for the Delta label. 'Kid' died in New Orleans on April, 25, 1949. |
