1933 - Lorenzo Tio, Jr., traditional jazz clarinetist from New Orleans, Louisiana passed away on this day. He was born in 1893, and was a true music teaching legend and titan in the New Orleans area. Among his students were famous jazz players Jimmie Noone, Barney Bigard, Omer Simeon and Johnny Dodds. He joined Papa Celestin in 1910, then went to Chicago with Manuel Perez in 1915. In 1917, he went back to New Orleans and the Celestin organization, then had a long stand in the A.J. Piron orchestra,where he made his only recordings. Lorenzo died in New York. |
