1897 - Sidney Bechet was born on this day. Clarinetist and soprano saxophonist and pioneer of New Orleans jazz. Along with Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Joe 'King' Oliver, began his career in the red light district of Storyville in New Orleans. Trhoughout his career, he played with all of the great players including Duke Ellington. He also maintained a reputation throughout his life as one of the greatest original geniuses and improvisors of jazz. Later in life he settled in France until his death on his birthday at the age of 62.
